Where to sleep in a campervan in the Basque Country: rules, motorhome areas and good habits

By the Mendi Camper teamPublished 4 min read

Waking up facing the ocean is part of the dream, but in the Basque Country, as along the whole Atlantic coast, the rules are strict in high season. Here is how to enjoy good nights in your van, legally and respectfully.

Parking is not camping: the basic rule

In France, a van can generally park wherever a car can. However, “camping” on public roads (putting out a table and chairs, opening an awning, levelling the vehicle) is not allowed outside designated places.

Above all, many Basque coastal towns ban overnight parking for vans and motorhomes near the beaches, especially in summer. Signs and height barriers at car park entrances are there to remind you: respect them, fines are common.

Motorhome areas (aires de camping-car)

This is the simplest option: dedicated pitches, often paid, sometimes with drinking water and a service point to empty waste water. You will find them on the coast and inland. In high season, arrive in the late afternoon to get a spot.

Community apps such as Park4night list areas and spots with travellers’ reviews: handy for finding an area, but always check the signs on site.

Campsites and farm stays

Campsites offer showers, electricity and peace and quiet: ideal every other night to recharge. Many open from April to October; book ahead in July and August.

Networks of local producers, such as France Passion, let you spend a night at a winegrower’s or a farm: a lovely way to discover Basque produce (sheep’s cheese, chilli pepper, cider).

Good vanlife habits

Arrive late, leave early, leave no trace, and only empty grey water and toilets at designated service points. Stay discreet: that is what keeps vans welcome.

When you pick up your rental, our team will point out the areas and campsites they know along your route. Just ask!
